Oprah can’t claim an already taken mountain

In the interview with individuals associated with the upcoming movie “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” Oprah Winfrey is quoted as saying in Parade Magazine (The Maui News, Aug. 4) that she restores herself on her mountain on Maui.

I suggest that Ms. Winfrey find an island with a mountain to call her own somewhere else, Haleakala is already taken.

It’s been the mountain of the kanaka ma’oli since the arrival of the first canoes. She states that she’s “a student of black history.”

OK, but maybe she should also study a little bit of the history of a people who had their government, lands and culture torn from them on the islands where she has a home.
