Discrimination falls outside the mores of society
An Oct. 24 letter writer denounces marriage equality based on his claim that the sexual behavior of two consenting adults in a same-sex marriage falls outside the mores of our society.
One can easily tell the behaviors that fall outside the mores of society, like prostitution, meth production and gambling, because those activities are illegal. The illegality of these activities leads to prosecution and punishment, which is quite different from discrimination.
To advocate for the discrimination of people engaging in a legal activity that one personally abhors is what the 14th Amendment to the Constitution (civics 101) was enacted to prevent. It is also illegal, since discrimination has been judged to fall outside the mores of society.
