Going green can’t be done while coal being burned

I think it’s great that Maui claims to be on the road to green energy. All the windmills and solar panels are good to see.

The enormous contradiction to all this green feel-good information is the coal-fired power plant that spews mercury and other dangerous contaminants into our air.

How can Maui Electric Co. claim to be going green when its continues to purchase power from the dirtiest power plant in Hawaii? The Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. plant is a coal-fired power plant that happens to burn a little cane waste when it is available. MECO continues to purchase this filthy power because it refuses to modernize its operations to maximize profits for the shareholders. It cannot be considered to be going green until it dumps HC&S.
