New basketball court a good deal for community

Mahalo to the County Council for accepting the donation of a basketball court in Lahaina (The Maui News, Oct. 5). It isn’t what the community really needs but for free we will take it. We will just have to make some accommodations for the kindergarten through 2nd-grade basketball players.

There are 15 tennis courts in West Maui with 11 lighted. There are nine at the civic center, four on Front Street and two at Napili Park. There are four outdoor basketball courts – lighted courts on Front Street and at the rec center near the Boys & Girls Club and unlighted at Napili Park and Waikuli Terrace Park.

Also, the objections of the tennis community about losing two courts is not a good argument. The civic center had five courts at one time. The other four were added because the Hyatt, Marriott and Royal Lahaina Resort were going to lose their courts. This never happened, so the civic center courts were not needed for tournaments but they were a backup. Now, with the basketball courts, we get a usage of a hundred people a night during the season, which is more usage then the whole year for tennis.

Seems to me the more people to use a facility the better the Parks Department and the county look.
