Reduce, reuse, recycle should be state’s goal

Regarding the waste-to-energy proposal article in the Oct. 15 The Maui News: If the council doesn’t know the return on investment of shipping recyclables to China, as some Maui recyclers are doing right now, then the council should investigate.

The concept of best highest use should always be implemented when deciding what to do with our finite resources. I think the council should engage state government to develop a comprehensive statewide plan to bring shipping costs down so Hawaii can attain the worthy goal of reduce, reuse, recycle.

While there are emissions from diesel-powered cargo vessels, a comprehensive plan would include those emissions in the overall decision of which plan has the least impact on our environment. Once we employ waste-to-energy, there’s no going back.
