Efforts of many responsible for wheelchair ramp

There was a blessing recently for a wheelchair-accessible wooden dune walkover ramp at Kamaole Beach Park I in Kihei.

Wheelchair ramp user and Kihei resident Andrew Valentine said (The Maui News, Oct. 16) that the ramp will help residents and visitors alike get into the water and he also challenged donors to buy more beach access wheelchairs. “We need more of them.” he said.

We agree completely. Our group, South Maui Volunteers, working through the Parks Department and UH Sea Grant, built the ramp with donations and volunteer labor. We are also buying another wheelchair for this beach park.

Tara Sabado, a recreation and inclusion specialist in the Parks and Recreation Department, has been our capable contact for this donation and can help answer additional questions about accessibility needs at our beach parks. Contact her at Tara.Sabado@co.maui.hi.us.

We are also grateful to John A. Hauoli Tomoso from from Tri-Isle Resource Conservation and Development Inc. (our 501c3 fiscal sponsor), and Sue Kiang from the Parks Department for helping with the process to get this donation accepted by the County Council.

We are grateful for the cooperative spirit from all involved.
