Appointment of county clerk lacked due diligence
As a longtime Maui resident (1980), I have a real problem with the recent appointment of Danny Mateo to county clerk at a salary slightly under $100,000, which is a considerable amount of money to me (The Maui News, Dec. 7).
I do not personally know the man. He may indeed be the best candidate to fill the position in the end, but I have a real problem that this position was filled without any consideration whatsoever to other potential candidates.
I have made several attempts online to review his educational training and skills to assess his qualifications for this position without any success. Perhaps he is the best person to fill this job but my real problem is that the County Council did not consider other applicants.
This in my opinion is not acceptable.
The County Council members are elected by us, the taxpayers and residents of Maui County, and in my opinion they have a responsibility to exercise due diligence to ensure that we have the most qualified person in this position to serve Maui County.
