Energy development must do no harm to environment

As we begin to explore the development of alternative energy for Maui County and the state of Hawaii and how to improve our electric grid system, I think more discussion is warranted regarding a two-way electrical grid between islands. The two critical criteria that need to be met are:

* That it benefits Maui County residents and energy users directly.

* That it does not affect our environment in a negative way.

Protecting our environment is of paramount importance as we develop alternative energy for Maui. If we can accomplish these objectives and can save money with a more-efficient electrical transmission system, then everyone will benefit. It is incumbent on all of us to be a good steward of our natural resources. I hope that future discussions can answer these and other questions so our future electrical system will serve us for generations to come.
