Genetically engineered foods should be avoided
I am a concerned mother with children that are a vital part of this thriving community. I was raised in Hawaii to be an active responsible participant in preserving our natural resources.
I reflect on being encouraged by my kupuna to recycle – not just our usual cans and bottles but everything that we used in our daily lives, everything from recycled and reclaimed water from washing dishes to washing rice. This, in turn, was used to water our plants and vegetables. Simple things like this helped impact sustaining our island lifestyle.
I would like to shed some light on the sensitive topic of “What is genetic engineering or GMO?”
Genetic engineering is a laboratory technique used to make new kinds of plants, animals or other living organisms. Using techniques to cross natural boundaries and force together DNA from any different species, such as inserting jellyfish genes in corn plants or human genes in rice. Hawaii has the highest recorded number of open-air experiments with genetically engineered plants in the world.
Genetically modified organism companies conduct short-term animal feeding trials, but this research is kept confidential. Therefore, vital information that would be important to determine safety concerns associated with these experiments is not given to the public, farmers, elected officials nor regulatory agencies.
Until genetically engineered foods have been researched thoroughly, fully tested and proved safe by unbiased researchers, it would be wise to avoid eating them or serving then to your ohana.
