Fireworks not a Hawaiian custom; should be banned

While growing up, it was OK to do pretty much what we wanted. We could not break the law, disturb others or harm property not our own. Illegal aerial fireworks and firecrackers do all three.

Fireworks are not a Hawaiian custom but a Chinese one supposedly to scare away evil spirits. If anyone still believes in evil spirits, a better protection is planting ti leaves on the four corners of your house. This Hawaiian tradition gives year-round protection, does not break the law, bother others or potentially burn down a neighbor’s house.

Ban fireworks now. Opt for more professional public fireworks. Of course, what can you expect from a County Council that cannot even address the chicken problem in neighborhoods.
