Develop efficiency before producing more energy

I’ve seen many people referring to the need for more renewable energy like hydroelectric power, geothermal, solar, etc. What I don’t understand is why we would want to develop more electricity from these sources when we are literally throwing away our electricity every day because it can’t be used or the energy is produced at the wrong time.

I have read there is simply no technology available at this time that is reliable and cost effective to store power.

Shouldn’t we consider tying our islands together first so we can distribute the power in an efficient manner and then start developing more energy? It stands to reason an underwater cable, under consideration, would be the best first step to a future of energy independence as long as it’s safe for the marine environment.
