No disrespect to Rep. Mink, but not right name for school

Senate Bill 2446 requires the Department of Education to name the new Kihei high school Patsy Takemoto Mink High School. No input was gathered from Kihei residents, and yet a hearing is slated for Feb. 5 in Honolulu, which means it could just slip by.

I acknowledge the accomplishments of U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink and mean no disrespect to her or to her family, but I believe I speak for many Kihei residents who believe that the name Kihei High School would be a more unifying name as it would establish a sense of place and belonging.

If you feel the same way, please contact your respective legislators and let them know how you feel. The politicians represent the people, and it is the people’s will that should be done. Malama pono.
