Tourism has had a negative impact on Maui

I read in a travel book the following: That which attracts tourism is destroyed by tourism.

The spread of tourism on Maui has had a devastating impact on the natural environment and a negative impact on the quality of life of the local people.

In 1967 every store on Front Street catered to the local people. Now none of them do so, and the same is pretty much true for Paia, Makawao and Kihei.

We are losing the use of our parks; our harbors are flooded with tourists; beach access is gone; and our grocery stores have become obstacle courses.

The powers that now control what happens on Maui have made a Faustian agreement. Faust sold his soul to the devil for some earthly pleasures but agreed to spend eternity in hell.
