Adjustments suggested for new school schedule

I’m sure you’ve heard of the new law passed regarding the school schedule for next year, but I’d like to give you a student’s perspective on it.

The law extends the school day by an hour. Our school schedule will change from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. to 7:45 a.m.-2:45 p.m. They passed this law because our public schools are academically behind others.

I support this law. But I’d make a few minor adjustments.

During football season, we practice from 2:30 p.m. until 6:30 or 7 p.m. After practice, the players have to go home and do their daily activities, like homework. Speaking from experience, all these things won’t get finished until about 10 p.m., give or take some time. Now, imagine this whole schedule pushed back 45 minutes. Some athletes won’t go to sleep until around 11 p.m., plus they’ll have to wake up earlier for school.

This is going to cause huge problems for many students and may even force students to make a decision: School or sports? Both can lead to college scholarships.

All I would change is completely taking away the additional 5 minutes to every class because of the fact that it’ll be useless. During these 5 minutes, the teacher can’t teach, according to the law. This time is meant to be study hall. But, seriously, not much can get done in 5 minutes. I can say that almost every student will have their phone out during these 5 minutes. It’ll just be wasted time.
