Maintenance of bikeways not what it needs to be

I wish to compliment the Department of Public Works for the announced future completion of the North Shore Greenway. I recall attending a bicycle alliance meeting at the Kaunoa Senior Center several years ago at which this issue was addressed.

One other comment I wish to make pertains to maintenance of bicycle pathways. From my observation, along with other bicyclists, the issue of maintaining the pathways is sorely lacking. An example is the section the North Shore Greenway between Stable Road and the Kaunoa Senior Center. Currently, the width of the bikeway is reduced to one-half the original width due to weed overgrowth and overhanging branches from trees on adjoining private property.

In the past several years I have observed, on two occasions, the weed abatement provided by workers from Maui Community Correctional Center, and it appears that this is sporadic maintenance. The same lack of oversight is apparent on the Mokulele Highway bike path. Weed encroachment is prevalent and destructive to the bike path surface.

Hopefully a solution to maintenance will be forthcoming.
