MECO asking wrong folks to pay for lost revenue

Let me get this straight, Maui Electric Co. is asking the Public Utilities Commission for a raise in the Revenue Balancing Account to offset the loss of revenue from people installing rooftop solar power systems (The Maui News, April 13)? Why should folks who can’t afford – or for whatever reason can’t install – rooftop solar pay for that loss of revenue?

If someone is totally off the grid with their solar system, great, no charge. If, however, people need to tap into the grid at night or when it’s cloudy, they should pay whatever it takes to make up for that lost revenue.
