Riding in pickup truck beds needs to be outlawed

I frequently observe passengers sitting in the beds of pickup trucks here on Maui.

An item in April 10’s Maui News stated that “A 23-year-old Kula man died Monday at Maui Memorial Medical Center after he sustained critical injuries Sunday night when he fell out of the bed of a moving pickup truck.”

How is it possible that the Maui police issue traffic citations for not wearing a seat belt in the back seat of a vehicle while ignoring the obvious danger of permitting people to ride unrestrained in a pickup truck bed. This exception to the law is not only putting many young people in harm’s way, it is responsible for the death of this young man.

I urge the powers that be to outlaw this practice immediately.
