Possible reasons for criticism of volunteer idea

A May 1 letter responding to the suggestion of creating volunteer firemen – to assist and not to replace existing firemen for Maui County – sounds like one of two things: Either the letter writer is not aware of the many, many fire departments and districts throughout the United States that have volunteer firemen and firewomen of the quality needed and reliable conduct to be a great asset to the fire departments and communities they serve, or he is so set in his ways that he is unable to look for solutions that help the community and save the county taxpayers money.

Of course, it is also possible that as the letter writer seeks political office he is so indebted to the firemen’s union that he is obliged to not look for positive solutions to our need for reducing costs while gaining help for the Fire Department.
