Proposed county budget increase is irresponsible
The Maui News April 30 article titled “Budget cuts are too much, panel told” suggests that the administration is objecting to potential cuts. I think we should be mindful that the Arakawa administration proposed a budget increase exceeding 11 percent.
This is being proposed at a time that the Hawaii consumer price index is forecast to increase 2.2 percent, personal income is forecast to increase 2.7 percent and my Social Security increased a meager 1.6 percent.
Any increase in next year’s budget should not exceed 2.7 percent. A greater increase from the current budget of $561 million is reckless and irresponsible, both for the administration and the Maui County Council.
