VA health care has long history of incompetence

Being a recipient of Veterans Affairs health care on Maui for 25 years, I am well versed in this area. The VA has been corrupt, irresponsible and incompetent for decades.

Twenty-five years ago there was one nurse, no doctor on Maui.

After many sessions with Sens. Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka and top VA officials, we now have three doctors and a competent staff.

There are two ways to qualify for VA care. One is to be a veteran under the poverty level. The other is to have a disability rating from 0 to 100 percent, with highest being a 100 percent disabled veteran.

The Maui clinic does not honor the priority system mandated by the VA. Services are withheld. The VA doctor sends a patient to a Honolulu specialist. He recommends a treatment which the VA ignores or does not authorize the medications or the recommended treatment.

VA health care is top notch at the doctor and nurse level, and a trip to Tripler Army Hospital is excellent. All managers and supervisors above the clinic level to the secretary pressure underlings to make cuts in care and misrepresent statistics.

President Barack Obama should fire the lot of anyone not seeing patients. Rehire the honest ones, provide some leadership and just maybe the nightmare of VA administration can get on the right track and provide the care veterans earned.

Yes, I am a 100 percent disabled Vietnam veteran and have experienced and continue to experience all of the above.
