Recycling made more inconvenient in West Maui
Last year, the Lahainaluna Road recycling center closed.
Environmental management by the county closed Waiehu because it wasn’t cost effective.
Now is a new budget season, so why can’t they open Lahainaluna with the money that had been spent on Waiehu, supposedly Lahainaluna is less costly? Now west-siders have to take their recyclables to Olowalu.
I go there every week with mine,
which is an extra 12-mile trip, and I have noticed that the bins there don’t get as full as quickly as they did at Lahainaluna. So that means that more trash than before is going to the landfill and that will shorten its life.
