Remember senator’s lack of support for hospital
South Maui citizens, please remember the efforts of Dr. Ron Kwon to build a privately funded second hospital on Maui, who had a private practice in Wailuku for nearly 23 years.
Dr. Kwon worked for 10 years on the proposed $212 million Malulani Health and Medical Center in Kihei. The application was rejected by the State Health Planning and Development Agency’s Certificate of Need Review Panel in 2006.
At a Kihei Community Association meeting, over 300 citizens begged our Sen. Roz Baker to support our efforts to challenge the antiquated certificate of need, and she refused – with increased population, the numerous ill being flown to Honolulu for treatment and old Maui Memorial Medical Center struggling.
There are excellent candidates challenging Roz and beholden to no one.
Kaiser has met with blockage of numerous efforts, and is building a new hospital in Kona, which has less population and two other hospitals.
