Retired Upcountry veterinarian will be missed

As some Maui pet owners may already be aware, Dr. Ronald Moyer (Upcountry Veterinary Services in Makawao) closed his practice earlier this year and retired for health reasons. This month he is moving to the Mainland to live with family.

This letter is to thank him publicly for all the years he has devoted to caring for Maui’s animals – from parakeets to horses. He was also the (usually volunteer) veterinarian for the East Maui Animal Refuge as well as a board member since the 1980s.

He was my veterinarian for 15 years and, as a cat rescuer, I needed his services often. He was always available, even at the most inconvenient hours, and was willing to try treatments that were not standard procedure – anything to save a life. He never gave up, even when I had.

Since his clinic was at his house, he would get up several times a night to check on seriously ill patients and give them medication.

When one of my cats that needed long-term care there needed a bath, he let me wash her upstairs in his kitchen sink. His numerous other acts of kindness, both to me and many others, are too many to list.

On behalf of all his human and animal friends over the years – we will all miss you greatly, Dr. Moyer. Aloha and mahalo nui loa.
