Greig-Nakasone deserves chance to serve on council

I commend both candidates, Napua Greig-Nakasone and Yuki Lei Sugimura, for running in the race for the Upcountry Maui County Council seat. They are women who are deeply connected to the community, are known for integrity and commitment to local causes, and have “stepped up to the plate” in various ways through the years. I think either candidate would be great in office, and part of me wishes that they were not running against each other.

However, since only one candidate can serve, I encourage voters who are on the fence to consider Napua, who is part of the Maui Ohana Coalition, a group of candidates that support honest government, a healthy diversified economy and a new vision for Maui. As a member of the Hawaii Farmers Union United, I know that Napua supports local food security, sustainable agriculture and development, and water rights for taro farmers.

Her family has deep roots on Maui and Napua can speak up for citizens whose voice is not always heard or listened to. From hearing Napua speak, my impression is that she is not shy and will stand up and inject the County Council with her energy.

We’ve had a County Council that has been conservative and could be considered stagnant. It’d be nice to have new faces there who can push the council into a more dynamic role that serves the community, instead of simply echoing the interests of “big business.” I believe Napua deserves a chance to be one of those new faces.
