Cutbacks in green programs a bad trend
I have read recently that Maui County is not accepting engine oil for recycling due to a loss of state funding. They want folks to store it until perhaps May. Many will do this but we all know that delays happen and people don’t want used oil all over their garages. This is very troubling. The old-timers may go back to spreading the oil on the ground as “weed control” like so many used to tell me they did.
The loss of state funding is troubling, but before pointing fingers I wonder why the funding was lost.
1. Was it because of an arbitrary and ill-conceived cost-cutting measure at the state level? If so, this is profoundly irresponsible for our aina.
2. Or, was it because of a procedural problem on the part of Maui County? Did they just flunk “Process 101” and not get the funding?
It only takes a little oil to contaminate a lot of water.
Can The Maui News help us find out what really happened? It seems we are cutting back on environmental programs. The battery-recycling program was recently stopped. This is a very bad trend.
