Removing useless signs a step toward ‘Mauitopia’

I have read with passive interest the frequent writings of a letter writer concerning his vision of creating a sort of “Mauitopia” on our island. But before we start getting the locals and visitors to join hands to sing “Kumbaya” or even take care of the odorous condition of the West Maui sewer treatment plant, I think we should look at a real pollution problem that affects us every driving day.

It is the invasive and overuse of roadway signs. Do we really need “pass with care,” “emergency stopping only” or “buckle up for safety” signs and “bike path” signs every eighth of a mile? Or how about that ever-popular stop sign coming out of an abandoned cane field?

If you want to drive yourself crazy the next time you are driving out and about, just look to the side of the road and count the number of signs which are totally useless, unnecessary, repetitive and just plain dumb.

So, if you want to move toward “Mauitopia,” let’s start with eliminating all of the polluting signs which interrupt our views of this beautiful island.
