More lanes at stoplights could ease traffic woes

When traffic is backed up for miles on the Lahaina highway, drivers tend to lag as they know they can’t make real progress. This creates a lot of spacing between cars. When these cars get near a stoplight, even if it is green, not many cars get through because of a lot of spacing.

Increasing the lanes at stoplights would allow for cars to assemble and many more cars could get through the lights that are causing the problems. This would involve having three or four main lanes about a half a mile each side of the highway lights.

Perhaps the direction of an extra lane could be reversed to accommodate the predictable excess traffic direction in the mornings and evenings.

Nobody ever mentions overpasses.

I sometimes joke that if you are in a hurry, get out of the car and walk to Lahaina.

Stop building so much would be OK also. I was happy when we had 1 million tourists a year. If we want quality visitors, we need a quality experience for them, and that would not include long lines of terrible traffic.

Very, very seldom does anybody pass on the highway anymore. I commend the drivers. There is no point in passing.
