County voters favored Clinton over Trump

In the 2016 Maui presidential election, Clinton got 70 per cent of the vote, Trump 28 per cent. Why the wide margin of difference?

One reason was that there are many more Democrats than there are Republicans here on Maui. Another reason may be Trump’s accusation that President Obama (a keki o ka aina) was born in Kenya. That false accusation by Trump went on for five years despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Trump’s campaign was tinged with racism. His remarks about certain racial groups and his association with white extremists may have soured local people’s opinion of him. Trump’s vindictive name-calling and public bragging about sexual predator behavior didn’t help him either.

I’m proud to be a citizen of Maui! Their position on Trump is the right one, in my opinion.
