Generous donations will help provide food to hungry

The National Association of Letter Carriers and the U.S. Postal Service would like to thank our postal patrons and community volunteers for their support in our 25th annual NALC food drive, which was recently held on Saturday May 13.

This is the largest single-day food drive in the nation. Over 220,000 letter carriers in over 10,000 cities and towns across the U.S. collect food donations from their patrons as they deliver their mail routes on that second Saturday in May. It is a major effort to fill food banks and pantries for the summer months when children are out of school and will not be receiving school lunches.

Last year the carriers collected a record 80 million pounds of food nationally. This year on Maui, with the assistance of our sister union, the National Rural Letter Carriers Association, and a generous donation from the Pacific Media Workers Guild, we collected 44,366 pounds of food and $660 in monetary donations. This will help the Maui Food Bank provide approximately 35,740 meals for “those in need,” in our island community.

Again, mahalo nui loa for filling those blue bags and making this food drive a complete success.
