Americans have become so dependent on government

A July 4 letter writer suggested the county do something about the rats/mice in Kihei. Kihei has a community association; wouldn’t that be the proper venue for dealing with this issue? And what is the major concern of someone who lives miles from the location of the problem?

We Americans have become so dependent on our governments to solve local problems with external sources (i.e., federal funding, state funding, county funding) that we no longer seem to feel responsible for taking care of our own problems.

Perhaps I should ask the federal, state and county governments to provide solar panel shade over my top-floor apartment so it doesn’t get so uncomfortably hot when I leave the apartment and have to close and lock the door that is the only way I get a cross current from the breeze that will also provide free electricity to me and fellow tenants.
