Do we want Maui to be a place of ghost malls?
One only has to look around our island to note the vast number of vacant storefronts and other commercial properties. In fact, a recent Colliers Report noted that there is a 30 percent vacancy rate in commercial and business property in Kihei alone. And, according to a Credit Suisse report, 8,000 American shopping malls will close this year!
Are we paying attention? Knowing this, why is our county permitting the building of new malls/shopping areas? Someone has got to pay attention.
The Maui Economic Development Board would do well to work with the county planners/permitters to recruit tenants/businesses who will fill these vacant spaces and contribute to the economy. Ghost malls are a blight. Let’s not build any more malls while existing ones sit empty.
