Editorial neglected to mention 2 more members
Your statehood editorial on Aug. 18 neglected to mention the other members of Congress that served as the first statehood delegation. The late Hiram L. Fong, the first Asian-American to serve and the only Chinese-American to be a United States senator, and the late Oren E. Long were the two elected to serve as Hawaii’s first U.S. senators.
This was the only time the state had a two-party delegation in the Senate. The Republican Party is a much different beast now than when my father served for 17 years in Washington, D.C. I don’t think he would have been very pleased to see what has happened to the GOP.
