Roads need to be better maintained for our safety

A major responsibility of government is to protect citizens. Unfortunately, looking at the sloppy, ill-kept, uncut and littered roads strewed with both live and dead weeds illustrates that the departments of transportation are failing miserably in protecting the traveling citizen. And it has gotten worse!

There are numerous areas Upcountry where one can’t see oncoming traffic because the twisting roads are completely covered by high weeds — blocking any ability to see what might be coming around the corner.

Roadside barriers are hidden behind dead and live weeds, sometimes 4 to 5 feet high, which have gone uncut for more than a year!

In the 30 years I have traveled roads Upcountry, conditions have continually deteriorated! Roads are unsafe and a sorry sight to see, and ultimately dangerous — indicative of state and county departments that seemingly can’t keep up with the work that is absolutely necessary.

And let me be clear, please.

I am not criticizing workers, for when they show up the work is good! Is it a budget issue, a growth issue given the expansion of roads, an administrative problem or a serious lack of attention and priority for Maui?

Irrespective, the roads must be far better maintained if our safety is to be insured.
