Decision by newspaper to run SOS ads is appreciated
As a small-business owner, I certainly appreciate the decision to run the full-page ads suggesting residents at least give greater consideration to shopping local. I see in the Nov. 19 letters to the editor, a couple referred to the ads as “shame ads.” That’s one way of looking at them.
Customers often ask if a business can match Amazon’s price, and why not?
Amazon has a market capitalization of $542 billion, without ever having a profit. Jeff Bezos is now the wealthiest man in America, based on his holdings in the company he started. Shares currently trade at over $1,100 per share. Venture capitalists have been the driving force behind the phenomenal growth of this company, not profits.
Small businesses across the world are driven by profitability, based on their hard work — no venture capitalists to lean on. The playing field has become so unbalanced that many small, local business have been forced out. We used to have laws in this country to ensure fair competition, but they seem to have fallen by the wayside.
Amazon does not buy ads in The Maui News, small local businesses do. Do we support the decision to run those ads? You bet we do!
