Fighting to continue Whale Day event at Kalama Park
I am the event sponsor and coordinator for savewhaleday.org, which is the event at Kalama Park in February. I have been working for two months on saving this yearly event.
The event is ready, however for some reason Parks Director Ka’ala Buenconsejo has stated that “Kalama Park is incompatible with the location, as provided in 13.04A.100F of the Maui County Code,” and also states, “The limited infrastructure, park design, and park use are not in line with requirements to support special events.” He also states that “War Memorial Complex is an area more suited to large-scale events.”
This event has been going on for many years at Kalama Park and in the venue I am fighting for to continue this South Maui tradition. The Whale Parade and all-day festival at Kalama Park is the fourth largest event yearly in Maui County.
My event will benefit four needy charities, Maui Food Bank, Salvation Army, Hale Kau Kau at St. Theresa Church and Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Center in Wailuku. These charities need help after the drain of the holidays and this is the goal for me.
I have a meeting at the Mayor’s Office on Dec. 6 with the mayor and parks director. Please feel free to write letters of support to The Maui News, Maui Now, Maui Time and please tell your friends.
We all want this event to take place.
