Minimal coverage of event slights Vietnam veterans

On Nov. 11, a glorious event honoring Vietnam veterans took place at the Kahili Golf Course banquet room. Over 300 people attended (150 veterans) and another 100 were on a wait list! U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, our mayor and other dignitaries made heartfelt speeches to the gathering followed by a commemorative pin presented to all vets.

I had the privilege of being in the receiving line to congratulate the vets — there was a lot of emotion and tears on display. So how did The Maui News report on this special event? Three days later on Page 4, a small picture and brief description of the event was all that was reported. Taking precedence that day was a big front-page picture “Levee repairs underway”! On Page 3, a full-page article and picture reported “Keiki Hula”!

From my point of view, one needs to seriously question The Maui News and its reporting priorities. On the biggest day for all Vietnam veterans, The Maui News chose to demonstrate the same lack of appreciation and attention that veterans have been subjected to for the last 40 years! The Maui News should be ashamed and embarrassed by its obvious slight. Veterans deserve and expect more.
