Prepare resources now for power outage notifications

The widespread outage on Oct. 24 presented the importance of being prepared during this active storm season. Just as you would prep emergency preparedness kits with food and water, it’s equally as critical to make sure you have several lines of communication to stay informed and in touch, especially if the power goes out.

We urge folks every year ahead of storm seasons to take time to prepare these resources now so you’ll have them at your fingertips:

Go to and sign up to receive outage and restoration information direct to your cellphones via email or text. Starting at 3:50 a.m. that day, we provided updates nearly every hour until that evening.

Updates are also posted to our company’s website, Facebook (Hawaiian Electric Cos.) and Twitter (@mauielectric).

No smartphone or internet access? Information was simultaneously shared with on-island radio and online news sources, including The Maui News, Maui Now and Maui Watch. Announcements were made on the statewide television stations and radio channels as well as nationwide outlets like CNN and the Weather Channel throughout the day.

Or, call our 24/7 trouble line at 871-7777 or toll-free 1 (877) 871-8461.

Keeping you informed is as much of a priority for us as it is making sure we safely restore power as quickly as possible. Sign up for the free notification services and bookmark the various online, radio and broadcast channels. Don’t wait for the next storm — do it today.
