Why hassle people sleeping in car at public parking lot?

On the night of Nov. 14, while sleeping in a car at Maalaea Harbor in the public parking lot across the road from the 76 station and Carl’s Jr., a Maui County police person shined his flashlight in and rapped on the driver’s side window with his baton. It was about midnight. We weren’t bothering anybody and we were sleeping soundly. There is no signage stating vehicles cannot park there and people can’t sleep there.

The police person issued a warning to the driver stating that he better not see us back here again. Why the hassle? There are hundreds of people sleeping in their vehicles on public lands in Maui County. There are so many homeless living on the street, too.

Look at Kahului and Alamaha Street and also the large contingent of people living on Kaulawahine Street in Kahului near the saline pool. Why don’t the police do something about these people?

I’m working, I just can’t afford a home or an apartment or condo. The car is my safe sleeping place. Let me sleep in it. Please!
