Highways department has done a good job recently
Contrary to popular opinion, I believe that state highways is doing a good job recently. Mahalo to the new district engineer.
Driving home recently, I noticed that all reflectors had been replaced along the entire pali section of Honoapiilani Highway. This had been woefully neglected in the past. Since there are no streetlights along the pali, reflectors are critically important in allowing visitors and residents to negotiate the curves at night — a small but important maintenance issue well addressed.
I also believe the current plan to divert all northbound traffic onto the bypass is a stroke of genius, contrary to popular opinion. With this move, a $200 million project will be highly utilized vs. being forgotten for the most part. It will relieve 50 percent of the traffic on Honoapiilani Highway. Northbound drivers will then have four opportunities to access Lahaina through Kai Hele Ku, Hokiokio, Lahainaluna and Keawe roadways. Double rights onto Honoapiilani Highway from Keawe Street would complete the transition well.
The shopping centers at the Gateway and across the street have a problem today as they are not well-designed with only one entry point each. Right turn out only would be the solution for each with U-turns further up Keawe.
