Jesus Christ versus the National Rifle Association

Jesus, in the Beatitudes, said “Blessed are the meek: for they will inherit the earth . . . Blessed are the peacemakers: for they will be called children of God.”

The NRA, in the “Bad Attitudes,” says “Blessed are the heavily armed: for their assault rifles shall gun down schoolchildren and protect against imaginary threats.”

Do you actually believe that keeping an AR-15 around the house will make your family more safe? How would that play out? I’ve lived in other countries where gun ownership is restricted. People there really are safer because there are far fewer guns floating around. There are violent crazies everywhere, but a dude with a knife can’t mow down a roomful of people in 30 seconds.

Some worship the Second Amendment, which allegedly protects us from tyrannical government. Ironically, those same people tend to also be “law and order,” “lock ’em up,” and “deport the illegal immigrants” types — or at least they vote as a bloc — you know, the folks who elected a wannabe tyrant as president.

So which is it to be? Armed revolution or support the police state? In the revolution scenario, how effective are those AR-15s gonna be against jet fighters and tanks? Maybe we should all keep an F-15 fighter in the garage, next to the UAVs and attack drones.
