Running red lights on Valley Isle becoming norm

Twenty years ago I rented a car in Phoenix and the attendant warned my wife and I to count to three after getting a green light at an intersection. Of course I questioned this piece of advice. The response, “You’ll usually have two or three cars running the red light and you don’t want to become a statistic.”

Forward to today on Maui. In a recent short trip out on the Veterans Highway, through four controlled intersections, I counted 11 vehicles running red lights; not yellows but full-out red. It’s become the norm!

I think it would be possible for MPD to make a concerted effort put a damper on this practice prior to seeing a fatality. Should I mention the number of cellphones being used in all the moving vehicles? Probably not.
