Maui jury duty experience was good; serve if called

Recently I was notified for jury duty. Needless to say, I was not looking forward to it. As soon as you tell someone you have jury duty they say I hope you don’t get picked.

I was very intimidated in the court surroundings. It was a new experience for me. I was chosen, and I am writing to tell readers not to hesitate to serve. The judge did a wonderful job of trying to make you comfortable as was the bailiff. If you need to use the restroom all you had to do was raise your hand. They make you feel you are very much appreciated by the attorneys as well. It was an experience I will always remember.

This was a criminal case and a difficult one. I was amazed at the ability of 12 strangers to come together to discuss the evidence in an enlightened way. Most jurors had something to share as to evidence presented. We were able to listen to each other and intelligently arrive at a conclusion.

Yes, there were times we were kept waiting for court to convene and frustrated at times with information we couldn’t have, but the experience was a learning and satisfying one. Please do your duty and serve if asked. You will feel a sense of having achieved something and contributing to our system. A system we are blessed to have.
