Response to hurricane was an overreaction

I was quite surprised to discover that the Department of Education closed schools on Maui, Wednesday to Friday, solely on the basis that a hurricane was approaching. I can understand two days, but Wednesday I was driving throughout the island with not a drop of water fell most of the day.

The local meteorologists have taken their lead from Mainland weathermen who get people worked up into a panic a week before a blizzard arrives. Some have coined the term “weather terrorists” to describe the phenomenon.

I understand being prepared and exercising caution, but the children of the island did not need a five-day weekend.
