Move away from animal agriculture, not toward it

Thank you for the excellent article about Mahi Pono’s interest in creating sustainable agricultural opportunities on Maui (The Maui News, Feb. 1).

If the Mahi Pono folks truly want to be responsible stewards of the land, they should nix their plans to develop cattle grazing and slaughterhouse interests.

Cattle ranching production contributes to the world’s most pressing environmental problems, including global warming, land degradation, air and water pollution and loss of biodiversity, according to FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations).

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate issued a report in October advising a collective reduction in the consumption of animal products to limit global sea level rise and climate disruption.

It is time to move away from animal agriculture, not toward it.
