MIL Golf program makes poor scheduling decision

The Maui Interscholastic League golf program announced they would not grant later golf tee times for the league championship tournament to MIL players from King Kekaulike and Seabury Hall high schools taking the college ACT exam that morning, but would grant earlier times to Lahainaluna golfers so they could attend their prom.

Anyone who plays golf knows an earlier tee time gives an advantage to players. Any normal person knows disallowing students taking the ACT exam unfairly penalizes college-bound athletes and sends the wrong message. These are student athletes with the emphasis on student.

Something is clearly wrong with the leadership of the MIL. I hope the school district takes a closer look at the program and the people responsible for decision-making. Our students deserve better.
