Maui Culinary Academy students compete for their cause
May 3, 2011 - Carla Tracy
Every year, Hula Grill holds an appetizer competition for students at Maui Culinary Academy in Kahului. The reason? The student who creates the most promising appetizer will get to see their dish on the menu at Hula Grill in Kaanapali.
Proceeds from the appetizer will then go back to Maui Culinary Academy. It’s a win-win situation. The competition was held recently and the judges included Peter Merriman and Scott McGrill of Hula Grill as well as Tom Lelli of Maui Culinary Academy. Yours truly hung around and tasted some of the dishes, before running off to meet a deadline.
The winner was Devon Davis, who will be graduating from MCA this semester on May 15th. Congrats, Devon! His winning recipe was a taro croquette with Maui Pineapple lomi lomi salad and ginger-ponzu reduction. Below is more information on this up-and-comer along with the second and third place winners.
