Source: Na Koa Ikaika Maui "done"
August 15, 2011 - Robert Collias
A source close to the situation just told me over the phone that he received a message via Facebook.com from a Na Koa Ikaika Maui player that "we're done" and the player has been picked up by the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the American Association and is headed that way in about an hour.
I will leave both the source and player nameless right now, but both of them are very reliable. The player said said he had been informed of the situation of Maui being done with the season "couple days ago when Lake County folded." The final home series of the season was supposed to take place last Wednesday through Saturday, but the cash-strapped Lake County Fielders did not make the trip.
Brendan Sagara is the pitching coach for Winnipeg, the same position he held for Maui last season. Pitcher Jamie Vermilyea, a former major leaguer with the Toronto Blue Jays and Maui's closer last season, and outfielder Fehlandt Lentini, Maui's lead-off hitter and home run leader last season, are current members of the Goldeyes.
Much more as this situation develops. Stay tuned.
