Baldwin appears in line to host first round

October 27, 2011 - Robert Collias
The state football brackets have not been announced, but someone obviously knows something about the schedule.

Howard Dashefsky announced on OC-16 television tonight during a break in th Kahuku-Kaiser state girls volleyball match that OC16 will be on Maui for a Nov. 11 state tournament football game. Seventh-ranked Baldwin (7-0) has already clinched the MIL Division I state berth and the MIL schedules passed out at games this season say that Nov. 11 is a Division I state game night. Lahainaluna (5-1) has clinched the MIL's D-II berth and the MIL schedules say that the D-II night is Nov. 12 — it is a good bet that the Lunas will be home on that night, as well.

Word of OC-16's intention to visit Maui for the second straight year was first stated by Kanoa Leahey during a Leilehua game last week.

My sources on Oahu feel like the Mules are the OIA team to beat, despite being ranked second in-between fellow OIA semifinalists Farrington and Kahuku, respectively. Good news for Baldwin if that happens, at least for the first week — the Mules have eliminated the Bears from state for the last four years in a row.

Here is a free link to's week 12 power rankings (top 10). And here is how I voted for both and the Star-Advertiser polls (gotta pay for S-A's, so I did not link to it) this week: 1. Farrington, 2. Kahuku, 3. Leilehua, 4. Campbell, 5. Baldwin, 6. Kamehameha Kapalama, 7. Punahou, 8. Saint Louis, 9. Pearl City, 10. Lahainaluna.

Note, one of the top-four-ranked OIA teams will not make the state playoffs and neither will defending state champion Saint Louis from the ILH — and only one of Punahou or Kamehameha Kapalama can make it. Time to get real and make the state playoffs into full eight-team brackets (instead of six, where two teams, usually the OIA and ILH champions, get quarterfinal byes)? P.S., I have been yelling about that indignation for years, in columns, in blogs, on the radio, etc.
