Akana comes home with UH hoopsters
December 18, 2011 - Robert Collias
The University of Hawaii men's basketball team plays North Carolina A&T this afternoon at 5 p.m. at War Memorial Gym and the main story line prior to the game for us is the return of former Molokai standout Brandyn Akana, now a UH assistant coach.
I talked to Akana at the bottom of this this story from UH's win over Chicago State last season at the Lahaina Civic Center.
And here is my game preview from today's paper with thoughts from head coach Gib Arnold and a little more from Akana, a natural as the team's recruiting coordinator.
I ran into Akana last night at the WMG — the Rainbows arrived for a late-night practice — as Baldwin was finishing an impressive win over a pretty good team from Australia in the final of the St. Anthony tournament.
Finally, to put all of this in perspective, here is a blast from the past from my buddy Rodney Yap, remembering Akana from his impressive days as a Farmer. Very cool stuff.
BTW, the Rainbows drew 331 for their game in Kona Friday night. Let's show the school and this team that it should continue to come to Maui — rest assured, they will not be returning to the Big Island anytime soon after that attendance number — by packing the old gym tonight.
