Lunas close in on first state soccer tournament, MIL title
January 18, 2012 - Robert Collias
Last season with two matches to play, the Lahainaluna boys soccer team held the lead in the MIL standings before giving up a two-goal lead in the final five minutes in an eventual tie with a last-place Kamehameha Maui team and lost in their finale, leaving the Lunas out of the state tournament — a place they have never been in their 30-season history in the sport — again.
With a huge 1-0 win over Kamehameha Maui on Tuesday night, on a goal from an unlikely source — junior midfielder Noah Camara, all 5-foot-3, 108 pounds of him, scored his first career goal — the Lunas moved to the brink of their first state berth and MIL crown.
"We learned last year to never let up,” Camara said.
Here is my story on the game.
Check the boys standings in Division I — you could throw a blanket over the top four and all five teams, really, until Kamehameha's loss on Tuesday. The Warriors, with two matches in hand compared to the Lunas, are not out of things yet, either.
